Jack Lowery is the author of It Was Vulgar and It Was Beautiful: How AIDS Activists Used Art to Fight a Pandemic (Bold Type Books), a book about the artist collective Gran Fury, and the work they produced in conjunction with ACT UP (the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power). It Was Vulgar and It Was Beautiful was named an Editors’ Choice by the New York Times Book Review and was shortlisted for the J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize. His essays and articles have appeared in publications such as The Atlantic, Art in America, BOMB, The Times Literary Supplement, Lithub and The Awl. He has taught in the MFA Writing Program and the Undergraduate Writing Program at Columbia University. As an editor, he has published the poetry of David Wojnarowicz. His second book, Indecent and Obscene: How America Lost Its Arts Funding, is forthcoming from Haymarket.
